It Waits In The Woods

It Waits In The Woods
By: Josh Malerman

Honestly this was one of the stories I most looked forward to from the Creature Feature series. I really loved Bird Box by Malerman and looked forward to seeing how he handled what seemed by the title to be a creepy monster in the woods.

Did he deliver? Absolutely! But I had to take a star off for the strange framing that he used. We start off very macro and then zoom in to Brenda intent on finding her sister’s body in the woods. There’s no section break or anything to change the perspectives, and it’s a little jarring. Once we get to her perspective, the story really picks up. I wish the entire piece was directly from her point of view.

I really loved the monster in this one! It was creepy, picked up on the creepypasta of stairs to nowhere randomly found in the woods, and was downright scary! I totally didn’t expect the ending and it was really unique too.

Overall a great read with a must-see monster. The framing was tough to get through though I had to knock off a star.

These stories are really strong considering I’m halfway through. I hope the rest are just as good.

My Rating: 4/5 stars
